Remembering Gerry Curtis
Gerry Curtis (Gerald Claude Curtis) -29 th October 1933 – 6 th September 2025.
It is with sadness that we announce the death of Gerry Curtis who passed away at the beginning of September 2025.
Gerry was a Member of Southend RFC for well over 70 years.
A young lithe and very fit Gerry made his SRFC debut in the “C”XV against Barnet RFC. Playing at fly half Gerry scored 3 tries in a 14-13 win. Without having played rugby before this was a momentous start for Gerry and he went on to enjoy many happy playing seasons with SRFC with the other colourful personalities in the lower sides. Gerry was also a founder of the “Newts” Sunday side.
Having hung up his boots Gerry became a major sponsor of the Club. Gerry with his brother Alan sponsored the construction and fitted out the 1 st XV changing room at our new clubhouse at Warner’s Park in memory of their father Claude and also continued providing very generous financial support to the Club for many years. A splendid supporter of the Club Gerry was deservedly elected as a Life Member in 1992.
Gerry had a private funeral but the Club are proposing to arrange a celebration at the Club to honour Gerry’s memory and details will follow.
The Club sends best wishes and condolences to Gerry’s wife and family for their sad loss.
New signing
Taine heading to Warner’s Bridge!
We’re delighted to announce the signing of Taine Mason, who will link up with the senior squad next month when he arrives from New Zealand.
Welcome Taine!
SRFC OPPORTUNITY
Dear Southend RFC member
Essex RFU has introduced a new scheme for club volunteers that will allow a volunteer to receive an ILM (City & Guilds) award in Leadership and Management Level 3, following completion of a specific project within the club; please see attached.
Unlike other volunteer schemes this gives the successful candidate a professionally recognised qualification which can only enhance an individual’s CV.
We’d like to target young individuals (age 16-25), as we see the benefit that this could bring to the club in developing the next generation of leaders. That said, we would be happy to hear from any candidate who would like to be considered.
Please read the attached for further information. If you or anyone that you know is interested in volunteering for this initiative then please contact David Short davidshortiam@sky.com or Andy Hutchison thorpebaymarine@btconnect.com by the 12th November 2025.
Many thanks

On Sunday, I attended the Southend Rugby Club ‘Mini and Midi’s’ Festival
The day was everything you would expect from such an exceptional local rugby club, it was packed with youth teams from across Essex taking part in an early season fixture.
The sense of community, teamwork and fun, was palpable!
A particular huge thank you to Paul Bach, Youth & Mini’s Chairman, and Lianne Brauton, Head of Minis and Midis, who took time out of her busy schedule to show me around the various pitches, teams, and their coaching staf
Having Fun

It is with great sadness that we report the death of Peter Thomas
It is with great sadness that we report the death of Peter Thomas
Pete joined Southend RFC in 1974 and started playing for the Colts team. He then moved into the senior side and quickly became a 1st team regular pick in the back row. Pete retired in 1985 due to serious illness but always supported SRFC.
Pete is one of only 2 people to have held the SRFC Presidents role twice for a total of 8 years.
He will be sadly missed.
RIP Pete
