UNDER 8s

The Under 8s rugby team is an exciting step forward in a young player’s development, with a stronger focus on team structure, match play, and supporting the ball carrier. While still playing Tag Rugby, players begin to understand more complex aspects of the game, setting the foundation for future contact rugby.

Training sessions introduce basic match formations and help players learn how to push forward as a unit, rather than as individuals. There's a strong emphasis on support play, teaching children how to run in support of the ball carrier, create space, and pass under pressure. Players begin to understand roles within the team, positioning, and the importance of working together to move up the field.

Communication continues to grow in importance. Players are encouraged to call for the ball, organise their defensive line, and talk to each other on the move. Coaches guide them in developing on-field awareness and building trust with teammates, helping them become more confident decision-makers.

As always, safety is a top priority. All sessions are designed with care to ensure a safe, age-appropriate experience. Coaches maintain a strong focus on tagging technique, spatial awareness, and safe gameplay, all of which are vital in preparing players for the eventual introduction of contact in the following season.

The Under 8s season blends fun and learning with more purposeful gameplay. Children develop greater tactical understanding and teamwork, experience competitive but friendly matches, and continue to grow their love for rugby — all while having a great time with friends.
