UNDER 16s

The Under 16s rugby team represents a crucial stage in a player’s development, bridging the gap between youth rugby and the senior game. At this level, players are challenged to apply everything they’ve learned in previous years while refining their skills, improving physical performance, and taking greater responsibility both on and off the field.

Training is focused on high-level skill execution, tactical awareness, and match fitness. Players develop precision in core techniques such as tackling, rucking, scrummaging, lineouts, and kicking, all within the context of structured team systems. Sessions are designed to replicate game intensity, encouraging quick decision-making, adaptability, and controlled aggression.

Tactical understanding becomes more advanced, with players learning how to manage the tempo of the game, exploit space, and implement multi-phase attacking and defensive strategies. Position-specific training helps players specialise and understand their role within the team, while still developing the versatility needed to adapt to different situations.

Communication, leadership, and accountability are major themes. Players are expected to take initiative—organising play, supporting teammates, and leading under pressure. Coaches support the development of leaders across the squad, with an emphasis on maturity, respect, and rugby values.

Player safety and welfare remain at the heart of everything. With the physical demands increasing, coaches place strong emphasis on technique, strength and conditioning, recovery, and injury prevention. A culture of respect, discipline, and player wellbeing is consistently reinforced.

The Under 16s season includes a full fixture list of league games, knockout competitions, and representative opportunities, offering players the chance to test themselves in competitive environments. It’s a season of growth, challenge, and pride, as players take meaningful steps towards senior-level rugby—developing not just as athletes, but as confident, disciplined, and committed young people.
