match report
Sunny Southend
With vim, vigour and a ‘get stuck in’ attitude Southend went someway to bringing their season back into line. On a fine day that reflected the play, they scored four trys and a bonus point against luckless Waterloo in the first fifteen minutes.
Ben McKeith, playing his second weekend at fullback, was the first to strike with a fine run down the line and chip over the top for a touch down, duly converted by Frost back from injury and playing on the wing.
Further try’s from Luke Sloan, Andy Frost and Sam Cook shortly followed, all converted by the immaculate boot of Frost. He converted another try from Isaac Cook before half time but had to watch as this open rugby resulted in two try’s against the head for Waterloo.
Half time arrived with the score at 38 – 14 and the happy crowd retired to the bar to catch their breath.
The first few minutes of the second half saw Waterloo playing their best spell of the game and bringing in another try from outside centre Payne. Southend were suddenly re-galvanised and replied straight away with a typical try from inside centre Chris Green. Another from Sloan and another from Frost followed and Southend were beyond reach and cruising. However Waterloo were not finished and scored a fourth try of their own bringing them a bonus point to travel home with.
Southend seemed upset and some more determined play resulted in Southends ninth try from flanker Richard Gill.
With Frost contributing 2 trys, 8 conversions and a penalty, his 29 points of Southends total 64 was a sterling effort in a fine team performance.
The win did not improve our league position of 12th. But with 11 points we have closed the gap to only five points from newcomers Tyndale laying in 6th and who we visit next week
Alan Grace.
