match report
A scrappy affair!
The second game of the afternoon against London Scottish was far tougher. Scottish paraded their summer signings from the upper echelons of the leagues and proved they are determined to continue their march back to the top. It will be a surprise if Southend have many harder matches this season. The game was fast and rugged with both sides battering each other ceaselessly. Scottish had the upper hand and turned 19 - 14 up, Chris Green and Dan Johnson for Southend scoring the 2 converted try's. The second half continued in the same vain with a couple of yellow cards against Southend and a red against Scottish who continued to hold the advantage scoring another try. Southend were then awarded a penalty try duly converted and we went into the last 10 mins still 4 points behind.
Scottish scored another try and with Southend defending one of the Scottish players was hurt, the referee decided a yellow card offense had been committed which resulted in a second yellow for Isaac Cooke who was also sent off. The Scottish player failed to recover and had to be stretchered off. The referee took the opportunity to end this friendly game early, leaving Scottish 33 -21 up. Ben Green will now be selecting his side from both this afternoons teams for Southends first League match of the season at home to Launceston next Saturday 3pm KO.
